During the summertime, that is certainly the question. I have spent countless hours pondering this question as summer came closer and closer. I knew that if he wasn't taking his ADHD medicine, then the Monk would more than likely need to move and jump constantly. And, although I know that is in his nature to do, it is NOT in mine and I worried about keeping up with him. I also knew that without a proper outlet for his energy, his behavior would change and he would start getting into trouble (or finding it at least). So that is what made me keep him on his medicine in the summer. Now, I know that there are critics out there who would condemn the fact that a five-year-old is even on medication for ADHD in the first place, or that think he should at least be off of it in the summer since he's not in school and therefore doesn't need it to concentrate or keep him calmed down. But then I have to ask...you ever been in a house or out in a public place with a child who has so much energy he can't even gain weight or gets so distracted that it leads him into getting into trouble?
He is taking his medicine this summer. Just like in the school year. And it is helping. He is sitting behind me right now on his netbook practicing his reading. He's calm and he's listening. We are both not stressed out or angry because he's not listening or is having a hard time focusing on tasks. It was a tough question to try and answer, but I feel as though it was the right decision to keep him on his meds.
